Tips for Choosing a Natural Mattress

Do you wonder what the difference is between a conventional mattress and a natural mattress? Basically, natural mattresses are made from simple, all natural materials that are derived from nature while the typical mattress found today is made from a combination of synthetic fibres derived from chemical sources. This makes it even more important to choose a natural bed over synthetic beds, since your health could be at stake.

A lot of health problems can be caused by sleeping on synthetic bedding such as allergies, breathing problems, skin problems and other issues. The chemicals used in making a typical mattress include flame retardant, pesticides and petrochemicals, which are also cancer causing agents in some situations. Keep these tips in mind when looking for a healthy mattress.

First, make sure that any mattress you look at is made from material that is certified organic. Make sure that everything from the core to the many layers of the mattress is really designed from organic materials such as cotton, latex or wool. Don’t just take a sales person’s word for it either, ask to see the manufacturer’s labelling information to make sure.

Secondly, if you are interested in a latex mattress, make sure that the latex is really organic and is not a combination of foam and latex. Memory foam is often made from petrochemicals and is not as healthy to sleep on as natural latex made from organic material harvested from the rubber tree plant. Be sure to choose a latex bed made from the Dunlap or Talalay processing method to be sure you have a great mattress.

Thirdly, you will find that there is a price difference between an organic mattress and a conventional bed. Since organic materials are higher to produce and making a natural mattress is a more tedious process, the cost is passed on to the consumer. However, even though conventional mattresses may be cheaper in the short term, the benefits you will receive from sleeping on an organic natural mattress will far outweigh the extra cost. After all, since you will spend 1/3 of your life in bed, isn’t it a better investment for your health and comfort?
